Humane Society of Elmore County News – 8 Dec ‘08

Saturday was cold, but certainly still a great day for the Millbrook Christmas Parade and we know our staff and volunteers had a great time waving to the crowds from our float. Many thanks to Jenefier, Randy, Kyle & ‘Roxie Lulu’ Dyches; Kenisha Brown ; Jay, Tina, Elijah, Randall & ‘Red’ Taylor; and Cheryl, Karen & ‘Marlin’ Willis.

As we look to next year, and if it is o’k with the Millbrook leadership, we might change things up and invite our shelter family of adopters to come walk in one big shelter group with all of their wonderful adopted pets in the parade, so keep that in mind for next year!

Lots of pet loving people and their dogs also showed up at the Prattville PETsMART for photos with Santa but don’t despair if you didn’t make it this weekend as we will be there again on Sat & Sun, 20 & 21 Dec from 11-4 each day. Many, many thanks to all of these super volunteers who helped make this happen: Scot Angus, David Brendle, Alesia Gilliland, Becky Powell, Carole Angus , Adrienne Brendle , Melinda & Claire Hughes, Lyndon Watson , Jason Clements, Kimberly Chamberlain, Amy Hall, Patricia Campbell , Linda Wright & Haley Gjesvold.

Don’t forget our Society Annual Meeting and Volunteer Appreciation evening this Tue, 9 Dec, 6:30 pm, at the Trinity Episcopal Church located on Hwy 231 in Wetumpka. We will review our accomplishments for 2008, look ahead to 2009, recognize our board, staff and volunteers and discuss/approve our new and updated Society By-Laws. If you are not a member of our shelter family, just give us a call at 334-567-3377 or stop by the shelter at 255 Central Plank Road , Wetumpka to join or update your membership. Current annual membership rates are only $10 per person and $15 per family.

We also hope to see a huge crowd this Saturday, 13 December, for the Wetumpka Christmas Parade starting at 2 pm. We will be there with some of our four-footed companions and hope it is another beautiful winter day.

As we look to Christmas, some families might be thinking of a pet for the family. We would love to be a part of that to help your family find the right fit for all of you – pet and people alike. Now if you are thinking of giving a pet as a gift, we do want to caution that a pet is a very personal thing and not like a scarf that can easily be returned. We do have gift certificates and suggest that if you want to help a friend or relative add a pet to their home, to get a certificate and perhaps package that with food dishes, blankets, toys and other fun things any new pet owner will need. Then that person can come on their own schedule to find the dog or cat that is the right fit for their home, family and lifestyle. Our experience is that this takes a lot of pressure off of you to find the “right” pet and gives the recipient a lot to look forward to as they prepare to find that special new companion.

The shelter will close at noon on 24 December and remain closed Thursday and Friday, but we will reopen on Saturday, the 27th. We will also close at noon on the 31st, remain closed on 1 January and be back open for business on Friday, 2 January.

“Never worry about the size of your Christmas tree. In the eyes of children, they are all 30 feet tall.” ~Larry Wilde, The Merry Book of Christmas
