Pet of the Week
Meet Ben! Ben is one of those Black Labs everyone talks about that never get a home. I am determined to prove everyone wrong and so are the folks at the shelter. I am about five months old & around 40 lbs. I am just a great dog who loves everyone, gets along great with other dogs, and thinks having a family of my own would be beyond cool!! The shelter even said they would reduce my adoption fee to help get me a home - not just any home, but a really good home. Our adoption fee is $100 for dogs & $80 for our cats and covers their mandatory spay/or neuter, basic immunizations, de-worming, microchip, heartworm check for dogs, rabies vaccination if old enough, and a free health exam. To see Ben or any other of our great pets, come to the shelter at 255 Central Plank Road, Wetumpka, AL, 36092, call us at 334-567-3377 or go to our website at www.elmorehumane.com . We are open for adoptions Mon-Thu 10-4, Fri 10-5 and Sat from 9-3.

We know that people who adopt our dogs tend to love watching dog shows on TV, so why not go to a huge one happening locally! This Thu, Fri, Sat and Sun (22-25 Apr) there will be a huge four-day dog show at Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery hosted by the Montgomery Kennel Club. If you want to learn about a breed this is a great way to do that. Not only are about 25% of dogs in shelters purebreds, but all of them are at least a mix of a couple of more, so the more you know about each breed, the better decisions you can make about what may be the best type dog for your family & home. A dog show is actually a great way to learn about both the good and the challenging aspects of many breeds.
Now here are just a few dog show etiquette rules. As much as everyone there loves dogs, you must leave your own pet at home as only show dogs are allowed in the Coliseum for safety and health reasons. The best time to approach and talk to the person showing their dog is AFTER they are finished competing in the ring. Dog shows are competition, so the owner or handler may be keenly interested in what is going on in the ring with their potential competitors and not really able to answer your questions at that time. Many of the dogs require hours and hours of grooming, so never just go up and pet a dog that is getting ready to go into the ring, especially if it is one that perhaps has a longer coat that needs to look ‘just right’ for the judge. And like any dog, please ask permission to pet the dog anyway as that is just something we all need to practice and teach our children. Besides the dogs themselves, there will be a large number of vendors with all matter of ‘doggy’ items for sale such as leashes, food, art, clothing, jewelry, toys, beds and more. Do you groom your own dog? If so there will be a vendor there who can sharpen your clippers and scissors.
Showing begins each day at 9 am and goes all day. You can see the schedule for each breed at each ring, or purchase a catalog that will have the entire schedule for each day in it. Each day will conclude with Best in Show which is always exciting – just like you see on TV! On Thu & Fri there will also be Obedience and Rally competitions in Teague Arena for those who might like to learn more about that fun way to compete with your dog.
Admission to the show is free, but there is a $2 parking fee at Garrett Coliseum. This show brings in nationally known dogs and judges, so join in the fun and spend a day surrounded by gorgeous dogs and fellow animal lovers.
On Saturday there will is also a raffle of great gift baskets and more by the Montgomery Kennel Club. All proceeds from this raffle are going to be donated to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department to help them purchase a new working dog.
And on Sat & Sun the Easter Seals Therapy Dogs on Call will be hosting the Southeast Dog Talent Auditions at Teague Arena which is behind the Coliseum. Do you have a dog with talent that would like to be on TV? To learn more about this & how to enter your dog, go to www.southeastdogtalent.com or call 334-395-4489. “ I love a dog. He does nothing for political reasons.” ~Will Rogers
